Distinguished and Famous people from The Woy Woy Peninsula
🎭 Spike Milligan
Spike Milligan was born in India, but Woy Woy became a familiar part of his life after his parents settled there. Visits produced jokes, affection and involvement in local causes, including conservation and support for community theatre. His absurd radio comedy with the Goons made him internationally known, while the Central Coast association gave local audiences a more personal connection. The teasing descriptions of the town should be read alongside that practical support. Woy Woy was a place he returned to through family, rather than the birthplace sometimes assigned to him.
💻 Olive Riley
Olive Riley became known to online readers late in a life that began at Broken Hill in 1899. Living in aged care at Woy Woy, she shared memories through a blog made with help from filmmaker Mike Rubbo, who had also created the documentary All About Olive. The State Library preserved the site as part of the state's digital record. She died in 2008. Her local story has an appealing reversal of expectations: somebody born before the twentieth century was using a new medium to bring a long remembered world to strangers.
🎬 Claude Flemming
Actor and filmmaker Claude Flemming directed and narrated Woy Woy: The Venice of Australia in 1936, following a commission from the local council. Appearing as an uncle accompanying a young girl, he introduced audiences to beaches, boating, bowls and the journey by train. The film now preserves a view of the peninsula before later development. His association is a specific creative project undertaken here. The ambitious title also captures an earlier age of tourism promotion, when a trip to local waterways could be offered with a cheerful hint of international grandeur.
